The EU announced plans to open to vaccinated international travelers including Americans by June.

This news came shortly after Spain said it would open to tourists in June.

Each country will get to decide on specific entry requirements. It looks like children who currently can’t receive a Covid-19 vaccine will likely be allowed entry if they provide proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before arrival in Europe.

Look for more information from individual countries to be released very soon.

French President,  Emmanuel Macron, announced France’s intentions to open to tourists this summer including Americans. Although no set plan or course of action has been released yet, we hope to have more details soon.

France isn’t alone. Iceland and Greece already allow US tourists to enter that are either vaccinated or provide a negative Covid-19 test. Shortly after France’s announcement, the European Union also released a statement with plans to open EU countries to US tourists for summer travel.

Most EU countries depend heavily on tourism for revenue and like many countries worldwide have been hit hard by the pandemic.

Travel to Europe will likely look and feel slightly different in the coming months. France has banned domestic flights that are under 2 1/2 hours in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. It has been suggested that travelers take a train instead of flying. We salute their efforts to protect our planet, that will however make it harder to catch a cheap flight to a nearby city. Still, taking a train allows travelers a better view, and will reduce emissions, which is always a good thing and in line with our values here at Pomelo.

With so many countries opening to vaccinated tourists, it seems like travel and tourism are on the rise again. If you do choose to travel, as always, please be respectful of local laws, customs, and people, and we hope you can get off the beaten path.
